Like our industry involvement, we have also been lending our talents and resources in our community for over sixty years. As is the case for any volunteer work, we believe we learn and get back in equal measure to our participation. Our associates are given up to twelve hours of paid time off each year to do volunteer work in our communities. Many of our associates participate in community service organizations, both individually, and as company representatives.
We are ardent supporters of United Way with an associate participation rate approaching 70% in some locations.
Among our business affiliations in our community are the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, and the Better Business Bureau.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has named its first ever academic program, outside of their graduate medical school program, as the Charles and Patsy Collat Industrial Distribution Program. The Collats, part of the family owners of Mayer Electric Supply, have made numerous donations of financial support that now total over $1 million. The Collat family and a number of other individuals and firms provided funding in 1990 to establish the Ben S. Weil Endowed Chair of Industrial Distribution. Ben S. Weil, Patsy’s father, established Mayer Electric Supply Company over 80 years ago.
