12 New Mayer Locations Earn Best Place to Work Honors

Friday, January 28, 2011 2:10:00 PM

Twelve Mayer locations recently received their first recognition as a Best Place to Work.  Competing in the statewide competition and receiving their very first honor of this type were the Mayer Teams in Anniston, Decatur, Dothan, Dothan Showroom, Gadsden, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Muscle Shoals, Sylacauga and Tuscaloosa.   Also among the recipients were repeat winners, Mayer-Birmingham, Pelham and the Birmingham and Pelham Lighting Showrooms.   The workplace assessment was conducted and evaluated by a company from Pennsylvania, Best Companies Group.  Over 200 companies and organizations entered the competition.

The Best Companies Group, the Alabama Society for Human Resource Management, and Business Alabama have posted a list of the honored companies: http://bestcompaniesal.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=52)Linked here are the published rankings .  You’ll find Mayer rated #2 in the large company category.

From the benchmarking report received as a result of the assessment, here are some of the findings – all Mayer associates can take pride in the results:

Leadership and Planning.  Overall Mayer scored 5% higher than the best and 11% higher than all large company participants in the entire category.

Corporate Culture and Communications. Again, much news to celebrate.  Both the frequency and details of the communications as well as the financial position of the company were rated significantly higher than the best  (96% favorable versus 85% favorable).  Associates at Mayer have made continuous improvements to our company communications since survey results began to be collected and distributed 13 years ago, and this area is a highly significant improvement over the results a decade ago.

Relationship with Supervisor.  Significantly higher results in supervisors handling work-related issues (96% compared to 89%) and helping people develop to their fullest (89% compared to 84%).

Training and Development.  Overall, Mayer associates scored this category 9% higher than the best. In all but one individual result, Mayer associates were more passionate about their company’s providing information, resources, clear expectations, and opportunities for advancement.  In responding to the statement, “This organization provides training or experiences to help me explore other possible opportunities within the company,” 90% of Mayer associates responded positively, compared to the 74% from the Top 5.

There were only one or two areas below the rankings of the best.  These are no surprise coming out of the Associate Survey.  In the category of Pay and Benefits, benefits overall satisfaction, health care costs, and dental benefits were all below the best. However, we were significantly more positive on fair pay, vacation, and sick leave.  All of these are issues we’ve worked on in the past decade and continue to work on. Mayer’s tuition reimbursement program was significantly better rated compared to the best--89% versus 81% (and overall, the average companies rated it a 73%).
